NEET UG Number of toppers down to 17 from 61 in revised results

NEET-UG: Number of toppers down to 17 from 61 in revised results

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has released the revised list of NEET-UG results, following a Supreme Court directive. A total of 17 candidates have bagged the top rank by scoring a perfect 720. The number of toppers in the previous list was 61.

NTA announced the first NEET-UG results on June 4, with 67 candidates achieving a perfect score of 720. However, due to a Supreme Court order, 1,563 candidates who received grace marks were required to retake the exam on June 23. The retest results showed a reduction in the number of perfect scorers to 61.

Out of 17 toppers, four are female candidates, while 13 are male candidates.

Physics question

Of the 67 candidates who achieved a perfect score of 720 on June 4, as many as 44 of them received the top score only because they were awarded additional five marks as grace marks for a Physics question they answered incorrectly. The grace marks were given due to an error in the old NCERT Physics textbook.

However, the Supreme Court consulted an expert committee from IIT Delhi to determine the correct answer. Following this, the Court ordered the NTA to revise the results, recognising only one correct answer. As a result, the 44 candidates will have their scores adjusted from 720 to 715, reflecting the scores without the grace marks.

Less qualified candidates

The revised results have led to a decrease of 415 candidates in the overall number of qualified candidates. Initially, 13,16,268 candidates had qualified, but the revised tally now stands at 13,15,853. Six candidates scored 716 marks, while 76 candidates scored 715 marks.

There are four toppers from Rajasthan in the revised results, the highest among states. Other toppers come from Maharashtra (3), Delhi (2), Uttar Pradesh (2), Bihar (1), Punjab (1), West Bengal (1), Tamil Nadu (1), Kerala (1), Chandigarh (1).

In the revised results, as many as 4,90,374 male candidates out of 8,81,967 who appeared for the exam qualified it, while 6,55,599 female candidates (out of 11,56,618 appeared) qualified the exam.

The revised results also showed a decrease of 135 candidates in the total number of candidates who appeared for the exam. Initially, the June 4 results showed 23,33,297 candidates as having appeared. However, the NTA clarified that this figure included cases of unfair means. The revised results now show a total of 23,33,162 candidates as having appeared.

The NEET-UG examination, held on May 5, had testing centres spanning 4,750 locations across 571 cities, including 14 international locations. The exam was conducted in 13 languages, including English,

Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu.
